Unit 1 Lesson 9

Workbook page 8 + 9

Muslims and dates
Muslims put a piece of chewed date in the mouth of a newborn baby. That's to reduce pain and stabilize heart rate. Now a new study, published in the British Medical Journal, has proved that.

The study
In the study, different amounts of sucrose were given to different infants. Those who were given high sucrose cried the least, and those who received only water cried for the longest time.

Why dates?
Dates are very high in sugar which makes the fruit quickly digestible, and very helpful to the brain. There are other benefits too. The date contains 2.2% protein, vitamin A and vitamin B. It has minerals such as sodium, calcium and iron. Potassium is also very effective for cases of hemorrhage.

Other foods in Islam
Medical scientists, researchers and dietitians have taken this new discovery on board. Many more ideas and practices found in the teachings of Islam are now getting the investigative attention they deserve. Other foods that Islam recommends include fish, honey, olives and milk, and these are all foods that are still eaten for their health benefits today.
